uniqueUNIQUE

(A 100 Word Story by Jeffrey Archer)

Paris, march 14th, 1921

The collector relit his cigar, picked up the magnifying glass and studied the triangular 1874 Cape of Good Hope.

‘I did warn you there were two,’ said the dealer, ‘so yours is not unique.’

‘How much?’

‘Ten Thousand francs.’

The collector wrote out a cheque, before taking a puff on his cigar, but it was no longer alight. He picked up a match, struck it, and set light to the stamp.

The dealer stared in disbelief as the stamp went up in smoke.

The collector smiled. ‘you were wrong, my friend, ‘ he said, ‘mine is unique’.

(A 100 Word Story by Jeffrey Archer. )

*               *               *

Jatin, congrats. You have the ability of becoming another Jeffry Archer! And if not that , you can certainly become another Saurabh Shah (which is not a big deal)!

    Superb Gujarati trans-creation! Loved it!

    • March 16, 2013 at 11:24 AM

Shishir, my first draft was 85 words. Second was 98 and final one was 100! Now YOU find which 15 words i had to add!

        • March 18, 2013 at 12:19 AM

Rupal, you seem to have read only the translation. You had to answer from the original version. However, nice try!

I guess Two Words could be ” Good Hope “

    • March 18, 2013 at 12:23 AM

Kashmiraji, Cape of Good Hope’s meaning would be clear only if you remember your Geography learnt in the school. You can not divide this word and if you do, it would become meaningless!

my friend is last tswo word

    • March 18, 2013 at 12:24 AM

It is a good guess. I might have guessed it if J.A. would have said that my first answer was incorrect.

“my friend” are two words added

I think two words could be ‘struck it’.

    • March 18, 2013 at 12:26 AM

Sorry, without these two words the sentence would become meaningless. So no writer would have written a sentence without ‘struck it’.

    Dear Saurabhbhai,

Very Good 100 words story, I guess the two words are “my friend “. Let wait for yours!

    • March 18, 2013 at 12:31 AM

      Nayan,
Your guess is similar to Smita’s. And my comment is also the same!

    • March 17, 2013 at 8:08 PM

Excellent suggestion, my friend. Well, only friend! I will certainly carry out this improvement in the translation after i declare the result. Thank you.
